
6 months and more of preparation will be bringing us to slums in Phnom Penh where we will be conducting community surveys to understand the needs of the community so that Riverkids may better serve and help them.
Many of the children we will be teaching take on rubbish collecting as a job to earn income for their family, in which their mother may be HIV positive and their father may be a drug addict or gambler. In such harsh conditions, Riverkids believe that only education can give these children hope of breaking out of the poverty cycle, as well as teach them to recognise their rights so they will not be forced to be child labourers, be sold away, or go into the sex trade.
